1. Safety
Please mind the following to ensure our scholars’ and our own safety:
- Keep your classroom door locked with the door open or ajar so observations can easily take place, but the door can be quickly closed and locked, if necessary
- Our gym lobby doors do not close all the way without intentionality. If you find yourself in the gym lobby, please check the doors are closed all the way
- Put the lockdown drill measures in your sub plans (see below)
- Active monitoring: if you notice a student who appears isolated, disaffected or whose mood has greatly changed recently, notify the school counselor or admin ASAP via email.
2. Lockdown drill
See reminders:
- Do not go into "drill mode" until it's officially announced by admin. You will hear the following announcement: “Code Red Lockdown Procedure. Code Red Lockdown. Keep all students in the classrooms and away from windows.”
- Cover classroom door windows during a lockdown only. Keep trash bag with tape behind your door to move quickly to cover the window. Unroll it and tape it down, then, after drill, roll it back up and tape in place. They appear to be see-through, but we’ve tested them, and they are not!
- Exterior blinds facing the outside should be open.
- Turn off your light and direct students to crouch/sit on the floor silently in a place where they will not be seen from the door window if the cover falls down.
- After you go into lockdown mode, do not let anyone in the classroom if they knock, rattle the door, or even say, “Let me in, it’s…” Even if Ms. Parker says, “Hey it’s Ms. Parker, let me in.” Once in lockdown, stay in lockdown no matter what happens.
- You should only have red cards posted in classrooms. (NO green cards!) Red cards should only be slid under the door or put in a window if there is a student in the room in need of medical attention or if the intruder is in the room with you.
- ALL staff, whether they have students or not, should go into drill mode once a lockdown has been announced.
- Prior to shutting their doors, staff should very quickly peep into the hallway, look to their left and to their right to pull any students into their classrooms before locking doors.
- Include lockdown expectations & buddy teachers in your sub plans
3. Student expectations
- Be completely silent during the lockdown
- Follow ALL directions from the teacher(s)
- Move to an area of the classroom where you are less likely to be seen and get low
